In 1990, the British scientist David Baker had already conducted research to prove that what happens in the female womb is vitally important to understand a new-born baby’s DNA. A study recently conducted by the Valencia Infertility Foundation, published in the prestigious English journal Development, reveals that a baby’s genes can be altered by the gestating female even though the egg used for the embryo originates from a donor, not her.

Until today, hypotheses suggesting that genetic exchange occurred during pregnancy with donated eggs had been rejected. Now, however, these hypotheses have returned with renewed force; the latest findings prove that communication does take place between the gestating female and the embryo, giving rise to changes in the genome of the future baby.

According to scientists leading the research, the study shows that an exchange takes place between the endometrium and the embryo, resulting in -as had already been suspected- physical similarities between mother and child when egg donation treatment was used to bring about pregnancy.

This occurs due to an exchange between the pregnant woman’s molecules and the embryo’s DNA, which produces changes in some genes but not in others. The research reveals the capacity of the pregnant woman to affect the embryo’s genetic expression; the genetic load is not exchanged as such, but the regulating capacity of what the future child’s DNA will express is changed.

The research provides the following example: if the baby is more likely to have green eyes due to the donor’s genetic load, this probability increases or decreases as a result of the pregnant woman’s regulatory capacity, through the molecular exchange that occurs in the endometrium.
